External applicants” are defined as applicants who currently do not have a tenure-track position in the Harvard School and Department/Unit/Area to which they are applying for a tenured position. This Phase I program does not include faculty who are being considered for a promotion from a tenure-track position to a tenured appointment in the same Harvard School and Department/Unit/Area.[1]. An “external finalist” is an external applicant whose tenured appointment has been approved by the President and Provost and who has obtained a contingent offer of Harvard employment.

At the time of their application, external applicants for tenured positions will be asked to:

  1. attest to the truthfulness and completeness of the materials they submit to Harvard for consideration of a possible faculty appointment;
  2. acknowledge that falsehoods—including material omissions—could be grounds for dismissal of their consideration or employment; and
  3. authorize current and former employers to release information to Harvard on substantiated findings or current formal complaints concerning harassment or discrimination, retaliation, sexual misconduct, bullying or intimidating/abusive behavior, unprofessional relationships, or misconduct related to scholarship, research, teaching, service, or clinical/patient care.

At the time that an offer is extended, external finalists approved for a tenured appointment will be:

  1. asked to complete a conduct questionnaire regarding findings of violation, on-going formal complaint investigations, or formal complaint investigations that did not conclude due to the external finalist’s departure concerning the above enumerated behaviors; and
  2. notified that Harvard will make conduct inquiries with their current and former employers, as they authorized us to do when they initially applied. Inquiries will only be made about formal complaint investigations and substantiated findings/determinations.

[1] At HMS, “external applicants” refers to candidates applying to tenured positions in which the primary appointment will be on the HMS Quad and HMS will be the faculty member’s employer. HMS faculty members with primary appointments at a Harvard affiliated hospital or in a non-ladder position anywhere at Harvard are also considered “external applicants” because they are not currently in a tenure-track position on the HMS Quad.
