Museum collections are valuable tools for teachers of any topic: they can give tangible expression to ideas and questions, illustrate arguments, and help students build practical and analytical skills. No matter your discipline, you can encourage students to “read” works of art and cultural heritage critically and connect them to the themes of your course. In this workshop, we will use works from the collections of the Harvard Art Museums and the Peabody Museum – all of which have been featured in real classes – to model effective strategies for engaging students in close looking in the online space. Participants will also learn how they can collaborate with the museums’ staff for remote and in-person visits in the future.

In advance of the session, participants are invited to explore the Harvard Art Museums collection database (https://www.harvardartmuseums.org/collections) and the Peabody Museum collection database (https://www.peabody.harvard.edu/collections) to select an item of potential interest for their teaching. Participants can share their selection by including its identification number when they register for the workshop.

To register, please fill out this form. You will receive an email with a link to the Zoom meeting a day prior to the workshop. Registration is capped at 25 participants.
