Harvard University is one of the nine universities originally convened by MIT on issues of gender equity in higher education (now known as the "MIT9"). This group includes the California Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Stanford University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. The presidents from each of these Universities came together in 2001 to state publicly that "institutions of higher education have an obligation, both for themselves and for the nation, to develop and utilize fully all the creative talent available."
