His recent biographies of Stephen Crane, Thomas Malthus, and Edmund Burke were all reviewed in  this summer’s New York Times Book Review.  He has published translations of Vergil, Camus, and Sartre, widely praised studies of Dickens and Shakespeare, and  founded the Annotated Austen Series for Harvard University Press. </p>
